The Gene Vance Jr. Foundation is leading an unprecedented nationwide response to needs regarding Extremity War Injuries that include marshalling the forces of military and civilian surgeons, researchers and clinicians to devise the best methods for treating wounds, many of which have never been seen before.

To this end, some of the USA's most highly skilled, renowned surgical experts and leaders in their field from preeminent institutions are partnering with the Foundation to address catastrophic wartime injuries providing the US Military with additional and unprecedented medical expertise completely free of charge.

Many of the casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan result from use of high-energy explosives with shrapnel, which cause ultra–high velocity fragmentation injuries, often to the extremities. The average wound from one of these improvised explosive devices requires 5 surgeries, and it is estimated that these conflicts have been responsible for more than an estimated 30,000 surgeries.
